Social Media

The article I chose to research was "Six Tips on Social Media in the Connected World."  I grew up in a generation where social media was such a huge aspect of our lives.  It all started in 5th grade with Xanga.  This was a social media website that you could blog about yourself, post pictures, create a profile, and message friends.  We also had instant messenger, where I would come home from school and go online to talk with my friends all night.  This was at a time where I was unaware that whatever I posted out online, was out to the public.  Learning over time of the importance of what you put on the internet is out there for everyone to see was a process.
"Six Tips on Social Media in the Connected World," explained to educators of what to think about when joining social media.  I loved the statement of "Don't post things that you wouldn't want showing up on the page of a newspaper."  This is a excellent way to put how to manage social media accounts.  As a educator, it is important to maintain professionalism on social media accounts.  This article states that don't be scared of social media because of this, just be aware of what you are posting and the message your trying to convey and always remember your audience.
Boundaries is one thing I am worried about as an educator.  I've heard stories of teachers becoming friends with students parents on Facebook and how they feel like it crossed some boundaries.  This article put in hinsight of how social media and connected with parents can be a beneficial way to communicate with one another.
I never have thought about posting about the grade I teach, what I teach, all to be used as a professional tool and resource.  I'm sure I have more friends that I know that are in the special education field.  How beneficial would it be to connect with them and ask for advice or tips!  This is one great takeaway from this article.  I never thought of doing this but I am definitely going to the next time I need advice or tips with something in the classroom!
