Triple E, what's that?!

Triple E is a framework that is designed to measure learning goals through tech integration.  It was designed for educators to use to evaluate how technology is affecting students and to what degree are the students benefiting from tech integration being used throughout the classroom.  Triple E has three levels, engagement, enhancement, extension.  Engagement is measuring how attentive are the students to the technology that is put in front of them.  If a student is non-engaged one's head may be down, talking with peers, etc.  Enhancement is observing how technology is affecting one's learning.  Technology is individualized to the student and guiding them to ENHANCE their learning in a positive way.  Extension is measured by how technology is benefitting the child and is the child able to bring what they have learned outside of the classroom.
Triple E would be a tool that I would use as an educator in a classroom.  I say this because we live in a society where technology is growing and used daily.  It is our jobs as educators to familiarize our students with technology but also to make sure that the way the technology is being used is benefiting learning.  Tripe E uses an assessment tool that an educator could use to rate parts of their lessons that use technology.  Here is a snapshot of part of the assessment to get a better idea.

This assessment tool will add up to a number based upon the answers chosen which will allow the teacher to observe if technology and learning are benefitting the student or hindering the students learning.

Personally, being in a kindergarten special education classroom I have seen how much technology has affected these kiddos lives, positively and some negatively.  My coworkers and I go back and forth whether or not we like the smartboard in our classroom.  We obviously love it due to all of its helpful tools but with a lot of our students it becomes a everyday obsession which can create behavior problems.  Some students love it and when it is turned off we often see major meltdowns.  Often the teacher in my classroom jokes and says "Sometimes I think if I videotaped myself and played it on the smartboard the kids will listen better."  In a way this is a good thing because it shows that the students are engaged but it also shows that when it's not on or integrated students have a hard time with engagement.  I believe there needs to be a balance and it's finding that balance and using Triple E to help assess who, what, when, and how to use integrate technology in the classroom

  1. Did you take the assessment to see where you fall on the scale?

  2. I did, I got a score of 8. According to the rating scale that is an average connection between technology and learning goals. Triple E and it's assessment made me look at how technology is being used in our classroom and although it does cause some behavior, it is our job to find a way to make it enhance a child's learning in the classroom.

  3. Hi Anna. I took the Triple E Assessment and received a score of 8 as well. I really liked reading about the Triple E because I always thought that as long as I included technology in the lesson that was fine. After reading Triple E, I now see that its more about how technology can strengthen the lesson that was taught. I once worked in a severe and profound special education classroom and one of the students was extremely obsessed over the IPAD, similar to your students with the Smartboard. The teacher I worked with decided to teach lessons for him using the IPAD and he made positive progress that school year. So I agree its about finding a balance to meet the students learning goal as well.
