Educational Technology Research

The findings that I looked into surprised me to a certain extent.  It was all information I have been assuming but never really wanted to hear it would be true.  I love the huge upbringing of technology and all of the useful ways its being used.  I have read about great things happening in the medical and science industry that could change and save people's lives.  The research article "The Internet of Things Connectivity Binge: What are the Implications?" stated that 49% of the worlds population is connected online.  This article discussed how technology is changing our society and what could this mean in few years, decades.  This article opened my eyes that even though the technology advances are great, it is also creating problems in others areas such as security, privacy, hacking, etc.  The question I have been pondering is "has technology taken over humanity?"  Research states that if technology caused complications would people choose to disconnect.  15% said that they would disconnect, while the other 85% said they would move more deeply into a connected life.  The article stated “People can get used to anything, and – just as with terrorism – the inevitable occasional damage from deliberate or inadvertent failures in highly networked systems will become routine. Occasional terrorism using Internet of Things connections is very likely, shutting down infrastructure, hospitals, businesses, etc. Hackers will always find vulnerabilities in highly networked systems, and technical fixes will not change that.” I found this quote to be fairly true but at where our internet is right now it is hard to imagine and I hope that our world will never use technology in such a damaging way because it has such great potential for us humans.

After reading that article and research, I wanted to find an article that was positive and education based.  I looked at the "2017 Digital Learning Report from Blackboard and Speak up."  I loved this website because you could go back to 2001 and look at the data and see how much as changed since then.  In 2001, 67% reported that the internet was a good source but it hasn't changed the way that they teach.  In 2017, 68% report that with the use of technology in their classroom they are better able to differentiate instruction for their students.  These two statistics show how much technology has grown since 2001.  Not only is it being implemented in the classroom, but teachers are finding ways to help students who may need extra support or differentiation.  This article explained the 5 elements that teachers that teachers need for technology to be successful in their classroom which is planning time, access to technology in the classroom, technology support, professional development and consistent, high quality Internet connectivity.  This I found to be useful information as a upcoming teacher because these are statistics that are useful in wanting to implement technology in the classroom.  Planning has to be done for technology to be efficient when put into the classroom.  I understand this being a paraprofessional in a kindergarten-sped classroom because if we have a technology malfunction, there will be tantrums that may last all day.  These malfunctions are either because of poor connectivity, a website being down, or the smartboard not connecting correctly to the computer.  No matter what it is, it creates dysfunction in the classroom and the school day.  On that note, I love technology but I do believe it needs to be limited and planned when incorporating it into the classroom.

  1. I appreciated that you decided to choose two different types of research to focus on: one a bit doom-and-gloom (yet still a reality that needs to be addressed) and one positive. We can find statistics on anything (positive or negative). It's what we do with the information that can change our game.

  2. I was also pleased to know that over half of teachers polled believed that it helps with differentiation. Personally, I think it needs to be higher for the sake of the students. In this day and age, there are too many different needs that can't be reached without technology.
